So, you decided how far you would let them take you in this assimilation thing and that you would not go any further and that is all that you did and meant that you were respectful and compliant and you knew your limit with what was being asked of you in maintaining the extent of your sense of independence and identity. When you felt someone coming close to your limit, then you decided that you would hold back on whatever they asked and tell them what you were not prepared to understand until you received the attention you were looking for and this may have meant no registered wedding. But, then you had to think about forward and what going forward would have entailed for your children and maybe for your identity as you defined it.
